Rules:
“Washers” is a game of skill, similar to horseshoes, in which two teams of two players each take turns tossing metal washers towards a “washer box” in order to score points. There are many, many localized variations of the washers game. The Lakeport Kiwanis’ “Grillin’ on the Green” Washers Tournament shall be governed by the rules set forth below. As a condition of their participation, all tournament participants agree that any and all disputes or disagreements concerning the rules of play, player conduct and/or the timing and duration of allowed play shall be resolved by decision of the tournament’s designated referee(s). All players shall themselves be responsible for keeping score in accordance with the following rules.
General Rules of Play:
Two three-holed washer boxes are placed ten (10) feet apart from the front edge of Box 1 to the front edge of Box 2. The front edge of each washer box shall be the “foul line” for players who are throwing from that washer box. Players may throw their washers from on top of the washer box or they may stand next to the washer box. All throws must be made from behind the foul line. If a player crosses the foul line while making a throw that player loses his turn.
Players throw washers in an attempt to get each washer into a hole in order to score points. A “round” consists of a team member making three (3) washer throws in a row as one “turn” followed by an opposing team member also making three (3) washer throws in a row. As in baseball, a round is not complete until a member of each competing team has taken his turn throwing three (3) washers at the target wash board.
The hole closest to the front edge of the target washer board is worth one (1) point. The center hole is worth three (3) points. The back hole is worth five (5) points. In order for points to be scored a player’s washer must fall into a hole. If a player’s washer is knocked into a hole by another player’s washer, the point(s) scored shall go to the player who threw the first washer.
If a player should land a washer into a particular hole, i.e. a “cupper”, that player scores the specified number of points. However, if a player from the opposing team should land a washer on top of the first player’s “cupper”, i.e. a “capper”, then the “cupper” score is cancelled and no points are awarded to the player who threw the first cupper. If a player throws one washer into a hole on top of another player’s washer, and then throws a second washer into the very same hole, that player scores nothing for the “capper” but shall be awarded one or more points for that player’s “cupper”.
The Starting Round:
To determine who will “pitch” first to start a game one player from each team throws a washer. Whoever gets the highest points, or gets closest to a hole, chooses if they want to go first or second. After a game has started, the last team to score in the previous round will throw first at the start of the next round.
Two-on-Two Team Play:
One member of each team will throw from each of the opposing washer boards. For example: Player 1 from Team A will toss three (3) washers at the target washer board. Player 1 from Team B will then toss three (3) washers at the same target washer board. The teams will tally and announce their respective scores from this first round of throws. This completes the first “round” of a two-on-two washers game.
Player 2 from Team A and Player 2 from Team B will then make their own throws towards the opposite washer board. After all six (6) washers have been tossed the teams will tally and announce their scores.
Repeat until game is won.
Winning the Game:
The first team to reach exactly 21 points wins the game! However, each round of throws must be completed before team scores are tallied, and the cancel rule does apply during each round of play. Thus, if a player throwing first in a particular round reaches a score of 21 points, the player throwing second in that round shall be allowed to complete his remaining throws in that particular round before team scores are tallied.
If a player reaches 21 points exactly with the first or second washer thrown in a particular round that player must also throw his remaining washer(s). In addition, the opposing team’s player must throw his washers to complete the round before team scores are tallied. The cancel rule shall govern with respect to the opposing player’s remaining throws in any round. Thus, a defending player may, by throwing a “capper”, cancel out the preceding team’s “winning” score.
If a player exceeds 21 points with his throws a penalty is incurred. If a team’s score at the end of a round is over 21 points, then that team’s score is reduced by the number of points scored which caused the team’s score to exceed 21, taken from the team’s score at the start of the round. For example: If a team has a score of 19 points at the start of a round, and a team member throws a 5 point “cupper” (which is not subsequently “capped”), the team’s score at the end of the round would be reduced by 5 points. Thus, the “Over 21” team’s score at the start of the next round would be 14.
Please Note: This tournament is proceeding in conjunction with various “Grillin’ on the Green” activities and is subject to a tight schedule. Actual playtime for each round of the tournament is expected to be no more than one-half hour. Under these rules, there will be a “Forty (40) Minute Rule”. If any game(s) in progress last forty (40) minutes without a winner, the tournament referee(s) shall be authorized to blow a whistle and declare “Time’s Up!” on any and all games in progress. The leading team at that time is the winner.
